Common Questions

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

We understand this isn’t a simple answer. Each project is unique and requires different levels of work from us. Designers bill by the hour, and take a commission on what they are selling if you buy your products through their network. If your project demands more work, time, deliverables, spaces, structural challenges, and liability (what we call the “project scope”), it will cost more.

A good rule of thumb is to consider your total project budget. Typically, Design fees are about 10% of the construction cost, though this can range from 5% to 15%. Our goal is to help you balance your needs with your investment by adjusting the project scope.

DO WE PAY YOU FIRST, OR AFTER,  OR ALONG THE WAY?

A retainer fee is required at the start of the process, $1,500,. We bill monthly as services are completed, and the retainer is applied to your final invoice. This retainer ensures the designer gets paid for their Time, Energy, and Ideas. it is also a way to help homeowners decide early if they want to invest in a designer with a certain level of experience . If not, it’s better to know upfront than midway through the project.

DO WE GET TO SEE THE DESIGN FOR OUR SPACE BEFORE WE HIRE YOU?

Typically, clients do not get to see a complete kitchen design before hiring a designer. The design process involves collaboration and multiple iterations to refine ideas and create a plan that best suits your needs. By hiring a designer, you’re investing in their expertise and the relationship to develop the perfect design together. This ensures the final design is tailored specifically to your space and preferences.

When you engage a designer in the retail spaces that are offering "free designs" the design is meant to be complimentary with the purchase of the product that the company is selling. Designers that work in that manner will only get paid for about 40% of the time and energy they put into doing "free design" work. because they get paid commissions on what sells.

I prefer to charge for my time and the design solution first. Then my focus isn't selling you product, and I can waive those hourly fees if the commission on product sourced through my network is greater.

I will have access to some product through various trade partnerships as a Designer/Dealer.

HOW LONG DOES THE PROCESS TAKE?

The time it takes for a kitchen designer to complete the design process can vary based on several factors, including the complexity of the project, the level of customization, and the designer’s workflow. We designers are usually Juggling several projects at once.

Generally, here’s a rough timeline:

  1. Initial Consultation: 1-2 weeks
  2. Concept Development: 2-4 weeks
  3. Design Refinement: 2-3 weeks
  4. Final Design and Documentation: 1-2 weeks

So, the entire process typically takes around 6-11 weeks. However, this can be shorter or longer depending on the specifics of your project and how quickly decisions are made.

WHAT IS YOUR SERVICE AREA?

I work out of my Home office currently. I spend a lot of my time in Brookings, SD - Sioux Falls, SD - and the Minneapolis - West St Paul, MN metro areas. I am willing to travel as long as I am compensated appropriately.

However, If you are outside of my normal "Zone" or If it is just more cost effective and you do not require me to make site visits to your location, I am fully capable of working with you virtually, I have worked for online companies in the past, and our showroom was online. Most manufacturers in this industry will send out samples of products that we might be making decisions on. This just takes more time, and little more patience.
